“Those kind of accidents are extremely rare in the sport. “I would say, from here, it’s a freak accident,” he said. Gartner was asked if this was a freak accident. When we’re on the road together those guys are like my brothers. In our sport the men and the women actually travel together. Nik and I both qualified for international juvenile ski races at the age of 13 and Nik’s dad was our coach for it. “Relationships go on through generations in our sport. “As Max was saying, particularly within the sport of ski cross, we’re a very tight knit crew,” said McIvor, who is home in Canada recovering from a knee injury she suffered last season. “The ski world really is like one big family,” she said, noting that the ski cross team is particularly close because, unlike some other sports, the men and women travel together and compete each week on the same hill. Whistler’s Ashleigh McIvor, the 2010 Olympic ski cross champion and a teammate of Zoricic’s, spoke to the media along with Gartner by conference call. The International Ski Federation (FIS) has helped provide the team with grief counsellors. They will stay over in Switzerland on Sunday and return home to Canada on Monday. The team was planning to have a candle ceremony for their teammate later Saturday. Gartner said the shocked and devastated Canadian team gathered in the finish area. Sunday’s race, the final one of the 2011-12 World Cup season, was also cancelled. He will be greatly missed by all of us and the ski community as a whole.” “Nik was a very talented young ski racer and a great athlete who was much loved by his teammates and fellow competitors. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with Nik’s family this morning. “Everybody is devastated with getting this news this morning. “Today is a very sad day for Alpine Canada, the ski community, the sport community at large,” Gartner said. We look at all our athletes as members of our family so it’s hard.
